Kaikoura Council’s director of post-earthquake reconstruction, Will Doughty, has been appointed the new chief executive officer for the area.

It’s Will Doughty, who came to Kaikoura as the Council’s Reconstruction Manager after the earthquake, and took on a management role with the North Canterbury Alliance for Transport Infrastructure Restoration (NCTIR).

Mayor Craig Mackle announced the appointment of the council members last week, following an unannounced hiring process until the media spotted the council’s announcements online.

The new CEO brings experience in leadership roles across a wide range of projects, providing key action programs for Christchurch City Council by rebuilding the city’s infrastructure.

“Will and his family, Colette, Olivia, and Josh have been living in (Kaikoura) for a little over three years. He has already built strong relationships in the community and works with people in a collaborative way.”

Mackley said Doughty also had a business sense to “propel the city forward.”

The Mayor thanked outgoing CEO Angela Ostwiesen for her role over the past five years, including Kaikoura’s response and recovery following the 2016 earthquake.

“It was a difficult few years and Angela worked hard to make us in the position we are in now … We are in a much better financial position than expected.”

Council’s Chief of Works and Services, Derek Milton, described Doughty’s appointment as a good result.

“He is a thin man, pragmatic, loved in society – we are fortunate to have him. He will bring a new perspective to the council.”

Doughty, who will take over the board in February, said he is excited about the opportunity.

“We live in a really wonderful place, and I look forward to leading a great team to help our community continue to recover and thrive,” he said.

The new CEO contracted for a period of five years.
