Cowell, Quakes KC Battle at MLS Playoffs

Cady Cowell became the youngest player in San Jose Earthquakes history to appear after the season ended last weekend in Kansas.

The 17-year-old Ceres player and eighth seed Earthquakes failed in their attempt to beat top seed Sporting KC in the first round of the League Cup qualifiers.

San Jose lost 3-0 in a penalty shootout to Kansas City after the two teams drew 3-3 through organization and overtime on Sunday at Children’s Mercy Park.

Cowell, a 5 ft 11166 lb winger / striker, is unreachable for suspension due to a busy schedule.

He’s been meeting up via Zoom with coaches from the men’s under-20 national team.

“He was a pro a year ago but he never traveled (with the first team),” said Father Deepen Cowell. “It was a whole other experience this season. He scored every match. This (the appearance of the final match) was the next step.”

Cowell contributed from the bench as a substitute.

And replaced Chia Salinas at the end of the second half (minute 87).

The Western Conference playoff was broadcast at 1pm on FS1.

“I’ve been excited about Kid because I know he can make a difference,” said Salinas, the full-time San Jose pass captain.

Cowell had two chances to score against Sporting KC, one during extra time.

Earthquakes collected the record total 8-10-6 this season.

Sporting KC improved to 13-6-3 and will face the fourth-seeded Minnesota United team in the semi-finals of the Conference in the first week of December.

“It was a great game,” said Deepen Cowell. “For the most part, they played (earthquakes) well. They didn’t bounce their way. It’s heartbreaking. They had a good year. Just being in the qualifiers from where they started was a huge deal.”

Cowell and Earthquakes secured post-season Western Conference Center with a 3–2 win over Los Angeles FC on October 4 in San Jose.

He contributed from the bench during the second half.

Cowell entered the match in the 87th minute.

He nearly scored his second goal this season.

Cowell used his speed to beat two defenders before his left-footed shot on a one-to-one split was deflected by Los Angeles goalkeeper Kenneth Vermeer.

Cowell made his fourth start of the season as Earthquakes ended the regular season with a 4-1 loss to Seattle Sounders FC on November 8th.

He made his Major League Soccer debut against Minnesota United on March 7.

He has not appeared in any league matches as a junior.

Cowell graduated from Cesar Chavez Junior High School in 2018.
