The Rangitoki District Council promotes the distinctive water tower in the form of mushrooms instead of bowling.

The distinctive water tower in the shape of a mushroom ox got a respite, but not everyone is happy.

Taumaihi St Tower has been a landmark on the south side of the city since it was built to support the growing number of Defense Force families stationed in Ōhakea in 1956.

The “mushrooms” were decommissioned two years ago and the Rangitoki County Council was building a new reservoir on the site, which means the earthquake-prone building needs to be demolished or strengthened to reduce the risk to the new infrastructure piece.

The council initiated a $ 181,500 seismic strengthening upgrade to the tower this week after the tower upgrade is the most popular option in public advice, though some feel it is not worth the cost in the long term.

Council staff estimated that it would cost $ 250,000 to demolish the tower, roughly $ 68,000 more than it strengthened modern earthquake standards.

The 135 responses to the poll were 83 to 48 in favor of keeping the tower standing.

The council’s director of assets and infrastructure, Arnaud Benadi, said in a report to the council that, despite the results of the consultations, officials believed demolishing the tower was the cheapest and safest option. But the councilors decided to stand with the public opinion and voted for reinforcement.

There was a backlash against the council’s decision to reinforce the tower, with unhappy comments being left on the council’s Facebook page and other community forums.
