U.S. Embassy statement marking the anniversary of the earthquake that struck Albania in 2019
November 26th marks the year since the earthquake struck Albania. The United States stands in solidarity with the Albanian people as you mark this solemn memory. Throughout the past year, Albania has shown tremendous resilience, not only in rebuilding, but in dealing with a global pandemic. The United States has been with you every step of the way, and we will continue to do so.
In the immediate aftermath of the earthquake, US officials and experts assisted with search-and-rescue efforts and assessing the structural integrity of homes and businesses in the affected areas. Then, in response to overwhelming humanitarian need, USAID worked with the Albanian Red Cross to distribute emergency supplies and UNICEF to provide psychosocial support services to children who have suffered losses and displacement.
In the months that followed, the United States has stood with you as you look to the future. To enhance Albania’s ability to respond to future disasters, the United States’ European Command (EUCOM) helped replenish depleted stocks and provide disaster-critical equipment. USAID provided funding to the Albanian Red Cross to establish an Emergency Operations Center that simplifies crisis response and coordination. In recognition of Albania’s unique historical heritage, we provided a grant to restore and preserve damaged cultural sites in the city of Durr كرs, the town of Croji and the village of Breeze. To ensure accountability to the Albanian people, in February we announced the creation of the Albanian American Transparency Academy to provide technical assistance in transparent governance, responsive governance to citizens, anti-corruption training, and judicial reform. Soon the academy will start its important work here in Albania.
Today is also American Thanksgiving, and it is a day to reflect on the things we are grateful for. We all at the U.S. Embassy are grateful for the friendship between our two countries and the many bridges between our peoples.
