Here’s why the San Jose Earthquakes are a great symbol of the challenging 2020 year

Visualize it: It’s July 15, 2020, the San Jose Earthquakes are playing their fourth game of the season and their second in the MLS is Back Tournament which is the 70th minute.

They lost 3-1 to Vancouver Whitecaps, are still unbeaten in the season and it looks like they are already preparing to write off this trip to Orlando to resume the most unconventional season in MLS ever.

Then the magic began.

Chris Wondolovsky scored first. Then Oswaldo Alanis scored the equalizer. Then Chia Salinas won it in the 98th minute. Can you believe that ?!

On one level, you definitely can, because Earthquakes have a knack for it. Back in the Goonies’ magical season in 2012, the highs in 2020 weren’t that high, but the best moments were special. From that win, to the win over LAFC that turned the season, MLS back to knockout win over Real Salt Lake, California Clasico beat LA Galaxy, and the epic fight against Sporting Kansas City that just came out in short, there have been a lot of great performances.

There were also times of suffering. Getting blown up by Minnesota United to start the season, then getting the same treatment by Loons again to exit MLS is Back Tournament. A eight-game unbeaten run to start a domestic comeback, and appears to spoil progress in the era of Matthias Almeida, who scored the most goals in the league in 2020.

I think unlike any team I’ve covered before, earthquakes were supposed to deal with what happened in 2020. Sure, the results weren’t always there, the talent gap was sometimes too much to overcome, but this team didn’t give up. Start.

This has been a difficult year for all of us. Perhaps the Corona virus pandemic and the economic crisis, and the inability to live as usual for eight months now, have pushed our healthcare system to the edge of an absolute precipice, street protests for justice and equality for all, controversial elections, all of that, you have not happened like others. Some of these things may have been damaged more than others. It’s okay, we’re all going through it pretty much this year.

And in the best of times, we all have bad days, and this year has produced more than its fair share of bad days. It was hard, and that’s okay.

So the example set by Team Earthquakes was inspiring, and I’m not the type to conclude with inspiration from the soccer team. From responses that were basically out of the window of what could happen over and over again, to Quakes duplicating her unusual style and getting results from it, on the odds, she’s inspiring. All is not lost. We can get past this.

I hope this message resonates with you just as it does with me. Hopefully Team Quakes have won the playoff game and we’ll prepare for the next one, I think playing them today was totally worth it. But their mentality was incredible. They did not descend on themselves. They just got back to work and made it a good season overall.
