Geologists have begun studying landslide-prone settlements in Sindhupalchuk

The National Reconstruction Authority and the Nepal Electricity Authority have begun a geological study of some high-risk human settlements in Sindhupalchuk district.

A study team arrived in the area and began work on Friday. The team is to study landslide-prone settlements in Liddy, Sanchagaon, San Namfa and Boldi from the rural municipality of Yougal; Ghumthang and Jambo from Baharabise Municipality; The Phulpingkatti and Bulkote from the rural municipality of Bhokushi.

However, locals in Lidi say that different teams have visited their settlement in the name of the study but their problems remain unresolved.

Several teams visit the camp to study and inspect. But they are not taking any initiatives to move the settlement to a safer place. “I think we will have to live under the constant threat of landslides forever,” said Tsering Tamang of Lady.

Sindhupalchok is one of the regions hardest hit by natural disasters. As many as 73 people have been killed in various landslides in Brabis municipality, Milamche municipality, Bhutkoshi rural municipality and Gugal rural municipality this year alone; Forty-two people were lost in those landslides. Landslides this year destroyed 130 homes and displaced 3,290 people in the area.

In 2014, a major landslide in Gori killed 145 people and displaced 127 families. Sindhupalchok was one of the areas hardest hit by the 2015 earthquake as well. A total of 3,575 people were killed in the earthquake – the highest number in one region.

According to the report submitted by the National Authority for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in July, up to 3,375 families in several Sindhubalchuk settlements are at high risk of landslides.

A parliamentary team also inspected landslide-affected settlements in Sindhupalchuk in October.

“Various teams have come to inspect at-risk settlements but the relocation process has not yet started. The government should immediately identify high risk settlements and move them to safer locations,” said Nima Lama, Pagmati County Council member representing Sindhupalchuk.
