Frozen in Time: Photos from inside the earthquake-damaged Christchurch Cathedral

Dusty and disheveled, the lines of the chairs are still exactly where they were for nearly a decade.

Drone footage from inside Christ Church Cathedral shows the abandoned building as it was left on February 22, 2011 – the day the 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck.

The building was blocked for nearly a decade. At that time, it became the home of pigeons and rats, and there were rumors of feral cats living among the wrecks.

Pictures taken last year revealed that the floor of the cathedral is littered with piles of rubble, and leaves climbing some of its walls.

The photos were taken by Beca Engineering, who surveyed the site ahead of a two-year project to stabilize the damaged building.

The footage was recorded in 2019 and shows the extent of the devastation that continues to this day.

Christ Church Cathedral has been closed to the public since it was severely damaged in the February 2011 earthquake.

Many of the surfaces inside are covered with bird droppings from the pigeons that perch within the ruins of the cathedral.

The footage, from the Christ Church Cathedral Repair Project (CCCRP), was invaluable to architects, heritage professionals, engineers and contractors to view the interior and assess the damage.

“The snapshots give everyone a common understanding of the situation inside the cathedral,” said Anne-Marie Mora, Project and Engagement Communications Manager.

“It shows that there is significant contamination from feral pigeons and gives us an indication of where the most severe structural damage is.”

The footage allowed the experts to better understand the building’s interior to help work on its stability.

The cathedral organ appears to be largely intact – though covered in dust.

Hundreds of birds made the rafters of the cathedral their home.

It also allowed the project team to identify the remaining heritage materials that needed to be recovered in order to repair and restore them to their previous condition.

The cathedral, dating back to 1850, has been in ruins since a devastating earthquake, but after years of wrangling, Anglicans voted in September 2017 to restore it.

A flying computer has been created by what a restored Christ Church Cathedral might look like in 2028.

Renovation of the historic site will include removing the walls stone by stone and installing large steel trusses.

Supplier approval was granted in March, with work to begin in May. The entire project is expected to cost over $ 100 million and take about ten years.
