A children’s book book published to help children and young people cope with COVID-19
GENEVA, 9 April 2020 – A new storybook designed to help children understand and reconcile with COVID-19 has been created through the collaboration of more than 50 organizations operating in the humanitarian sector, including the World Health Organization, United Nations Children’s Fund, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and Save the Children.
With the help of an imaginative creature, Ario, “My hero is you, how kids can fight COVID-19!” explains how children can protect themselves, their families and friends from coronaviruses, and how to manage difficult emotions when confronted with a new and rapidly changing reality.
The book – primarily intended for children ages 6 to 11 – is a project of the project Reference Group of the Inter-Ministerial Standing Committee on Mental Health and Psychosocial Emergency Support, a unique collaboration between United Nations agencies, national and international NGOs and international agencies providing mental health and psychosocial support in emergency situations.
During the early phase of the project, more than 1,700 children, parents, carers and teachers from around the world shared how they deal with the COVID-19 pandemic. Writer-writer and illustrator Helen Patuck and the project team have been invaluable contributors to ensuring that the story and its messages resonate with children from different backgrounds and continents.
In order to reach as many children as possible, the book will be widely translated and six language versions will be published today, with more than 30 others being prepared. It is published both as an online product and as a book.
