The United Arab Emirates gives Albania $ 70 million to build 2,000 apartments for earthquake victims – director
The United Arab Emirates granted Albania $ 70 million to finance the construction of 2,000 apartments in Durrs, the city worst affected by the November 26, 2019 earthquake.
Local media reported that the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development and the government of Albania signed an agreement in Dubai on Sunday.
On the first anniversary of the earthquake that left 51 people dead, Prime Minister Edi Rama visited the UAE to secure funding for the government construction project.
The visit resulted in an agreement on Sunday signed by the Minister of Construction Arben Ahmedaj and the Director General of the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development Muhammad Saif Al-Suwaidi.
“The redevelopment of Durrs County has been affected by the global pandemic and this project will help accelerate our continued economic recovery,” said Ahmadi.
This development project represents the core values of the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development and the United Arab Emirates. After signing the agreement, Al Suwaidi said, “It helps provide safe and affordable housing for people in line with the United Nations’ sustainable development goals while contributing to the positive economic development of a strategic, global global partner country.”
During his visit last week, Rama announced that the UAE would also invest in converting the Durres shipping port into a tourist port.
International donors have pledged 1.15 billion euros in donations, grants and loans to assist the Albanian government in reconstruction projects after the earthquake.
A year after the devastating earthquake, the government is engaging in projects to build housing units for the victims.
