TDR and WHO are launching a new set of digital health research tools for TB care
TDR, in partnership with the WHO World Tuberculosis Program, has developed an interactive networking tool that supports national TB programs and other partners to conduct implementation research designed to assess digital TB care technologies. This will be launched today at a workshop held in Beijing, China.
CHALLENGE: Application and expansion of digital TB care tools
The persistence of the tuberculosis (TB) epidemic requires innovative approaches to TB care and prevention. Digital technologies represent new ways to improve patient-centered care or to make better use of resources using TB programs. Therefore, digital technologies are emerging as important tools to advance progress in achieving the goals of the WHO Strategy for the End of TB and the political declaration of the 2018 UN High-Level Meeting on TB.
These technologies are even more critical in times of crisis, such as the current COVID-19 pandemic. However, barriers to the effective implementation and dissemination of innovation are often context-specific and may require different approaches, depending on the setting.
SOLUTION: A set of implementation research tools focused on digital technologies and TB
Implementation research (IR) is a systematic approach to identifying, understanding, and addressing barriers to implementing and expanding effective and quality health interventions, strategies, and policies. IR provides an important approach to assessing how innovations such as digital technologies can be used to overcome challenges in TB care and to generate evidence that can lead to their future introduction and dissemination in other environments. The content of the tool is also relevant for the application of digital technologies to other health conditions, including COVID-19.
The Implementation research for digital technologies and TB (IR4DTB) toolkit aims to build capacity in R&D and help fill gaps in knowledge about the use and increase of digital TB care technologies. The interactive toolkit consists of six modules that reflect the key steps in the IR process:
- Preparation for implementation research
- Developing IR goals and issues
- Research methods
- Data management and analysis
- IR planning and implementation
- Translation of knowledge
The handbook will be launched during a five-day workshop in Beijing, China, from November 23-27, organized by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the Chinese TB Association, in collaboration with TDR and the TBZ World Program. The training will be held in person for staff from the national TB program of China, in 4 project teams, and almost for participants from Malaysia, Pakistan and Uzbekistan. The workshop will help national teams develop comprehensive R&D proposals to study the challenges of R&D related to the effective expansion of digital health technologies for TB care in their home countries.
