The coronavirus pandemic has hit those living in the poorest, weakest and poorest areas hardest. According to official figures, the death rate in the poorest areas of England was almost double that of the lowest in April to June. The government has said it is committed to reducing the shortfall and has spent tens of billions of pounds on welfare aid this year.
