LA DWP replaced 7,000 miles of Los Angeles water pipes with earthquake-proof tubing; The water will continue to flow after the vibration stops

Los Angeles (CABC) – Local utilities are looking for new ways to make the Southern California earthquake safe. One way is to replace thousands of miles of old water pipes! These new tubes can help keep water flowing after one major injury.

LA DWP is replacing 7,000 miles of plumbing across Los Angeles with earthquake-proof tubes to ensure water continues to flow after the vibration stops.

“We live in earthquake country. The Northridge earthquake is another reminder for us to make sure we develop resilient infrastructure where we can recover and provide reliable water supplies to our customers after a major earthquake,” said Alvin Bautista, LA DWP.

LA DWP joined Japan’s earthquake resistant piping network in 2013, making Los Angeles the first public utility system in the United States to use the earthquake-proof tube. It includes a stronger steel tube coating and a joint that will not crack during vibration.

“Our normal tube does not have that kind of freedom of movement, so the material that we use has it, so it will allow a certain amount of expansion and contraction, and it also gives it a degree of freedom as it can rotate along there so as not to block the road with excessive movement underground.”

The LA DWP Long Term Replacement Plan will take years to complete; The target sites in critical earthquake risk areas were the first to receive the anti-seismic tubes.

“Areas where we need reliable water supplies, such as hospitals, command and control centers, shelters, and areas where people congregate after a major earthquake, those areas have to be reliable with water supplies, and this is our focus,” Bautista said.
