Intensive care units (ICUs) are specialized rooms in a hospital that care for very sick people.

They provide highly specialized technical monitoring equipment and personnel.

Coronavirus patients have lung problems and are usually admitted to ICUs to help them breathe.

As Prime Minister Boris Johnson continues to treat coronavirus in an ICU, BBC Health Correspondent Laura Foster explains how it works.
