France: Fixed shelves for geothermal project after small earthquakes | News | DW

Residents in western France and southwestern Germany on Friday announced a small earthquake with a magnitude of 3.5.

Fonroche, the operator of the Alsace geothermal project, said it would halt operations after a second earthquake of 2.8 magnitude, amid accusations that its work was to blame.

The two minor earthquakes came after a series of less severe tremors recorded over the past 13 months that have been linked to the power project.

The earthquake was felt across the border in Germany, where officials in the state of Baden-Württemberg said they had received hundreds of reports and inquiries about the tremors from residents.

The French National Seismological Network has classified the 3.5-magnitude earthquake, which occurred at 6:59 am, as being caused by human activity. The epicenter was about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) north of Strasbourg, near a site hosting a geothermal power plant project led by Vonroch.

According to the website of the French newspaper Le Monde, two wells were drilled at the site at a depth of 5 kilometers to pump hot water from the ground to exploit its potential on the surface.

The governor’s office, the central government representative in charge of France’s Lower Rhine region, called for a halt to operations. The geothermal project has been a key pillar in the region’s strategy for moving to more sustainable energy sources.

A tweet from the office stated that “protecting people is the governor’s first priority.”

A Fonroch spokesman confirmed to Agence France-Presse that the quake was linked to its activities. In a press release, the company announced the launch of a measure to gradually reduce the flow of water in wells towards a “complete stop”.

Vonroch said the procedure “will take about a month”.
