On Friday, Mauna Loa provided a vigorous reminder that it is still largely an active volcano as capable of doing as much or more damage as its neighbor Kilauea.

An earthquake measuring 4.1 on the Richter scale, which originated deep in the west side of the giant 13,861 feet high, struck the island of Hawaii Friday morning.

The volcano has remained silent for the past 36 years. This is in contrast to Kilauea, which has been revolting continuously since January 1983, until it ceased to function after the spectacular and devastating Bona eruption in 2018.

Zhang said the Mauna Loa alert level was still at advisory, or yellow, which means the volcano is showing signs of “elevated turbulence” compared to its usual long-term background levels.

Mauna Loa is the only American volcano with a high level of alert at the moment.

HVO scientists on Thursday published their weekly update to Mauna Loa, saying that deformation and earthquake rates have not changed significantly over the past week, but have remained above long-term background levels.

Additionally, GPS measurements continue to show slow and long-term inflation at the summit, consistent with the magma supply of the volcano’s shallow storage system.

As for Friday’s earthquake, HVO officials said it occurred about 3 miles below sea level and produced enough movement of the light to vibrate across the island.

The movement was not sufficient, however, to generate the tsunami, according to the Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency.

Mauna Loa, the world’s largest active volcano, has erupted 33 times since 1843, with periods between eruptions ranging from months to decades, according to the HVO.

Scientists say that when Mauna Loa erupts, it tends to produce a lot of fast-moving lava that can flow into the communities on both sides of the island.
