An earthquake measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale near Frasertown, Wairowa Region, Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand, was reported just 3 minutes ago by the New Zealand Geological Survey and Seismology Commission (GeoNet), which is the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in New Zealand. The earthquake occurred at a fairly shallow depth of 31.6 km below the epicenter on the morning of Monday 7 December 2020 at 8.24 am local time. The exact size, focus and depth of an earthquake may be reviewed within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and improve their calculations, or when other agencies release their reports. Our monitoring service has identified a second report from the Euro-Mediterranean region. The Seismological Center (EMSC) which recorded the earthquake with a magnitude of 4.6, based on the preliminary seismic data, the earthquake should not have caused any major damage, but perhaps many people felt it as a slight shaking in the epicenter area. Perhaps a weak tremor was felt in Frasertown (area 300) which is 18 km from the epicenter, Wairowa (4,300 people) at 26 km, Twai (280) at 26 km, Nohaca (340 residential area) at 35 km, Manotoki (population 690) is 41 km away, and Gisborne (34300) is 50 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the earthquake may have felt a very weak tremor include Napier (population 56,800) located 89 km from the epicenter, and Taradale (extrusion zone 16,600) at 96 km.
