Adam Wainwright won the Roberto Clemente award, becoming the sixth Cardinals player to be honored

Major League Baseball announced on Monday that veteran right-hand man Adam Wainwright won this year’s Roberto Clemente award. The honor is awarded annually to a player who demonstrates “the hall of family values ​​that Roberto Clemente demonstrated in his commitment to society and his understanding of the value of helping others,” according to the league.

Wainwright, the free agent who has spent 15 years of his major league career to date with the Cardinals, is the sixth member of the St. Louis Organization to win the award, the most from any team. Previous winners include Cardinals Le Brock, Ozzie Smith, Albert Pujols, Carlos Beltran and Yader Molina. The award was originally created in 1971, and was subsequently named Clemente in 1973. Clemente died in a plane crash on New Year’s Eve in 1972 during a humanitarian effort to deliver supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua.

The official MLB release states that Wainwright founded the Big League Impact in 2013 as a way to give back to the world. Here are some of his accomplishments with BLI since:

Establishment of Ferrer Village High School in Haiti, which opened for the 2019-2020 academic year. It has also partnered with the Water Mission to build a clean water system for the community.

In Honduras, BLI has funded the construction of a clean water system serving more than 15,000 people.

In Ethiopia, his trip there resulted in the purchase of an 11-acre plot of land that is now the site of a clinic, dairy, and crops. Adam also partnered with Crisis Aid International to feed children in Africa who would otherwise be starving to death, and he provided assistance to help give victims of sex trafficking a new lease on life.

BLI’s relationship with Crisis Aid provides weekly meals to 3,000 families who need it most, including a local campaign that helps feed 200 families annually in South St. Louis.

In 2019, Big League Impact partnered with the Garth Brooks Teammates for Kids Foundation to launch the MLB and Club-supported “Home Plate Project” to tackle family and child food insecurity. To date, the efforts have provided nearly 8 million meals across the United States and Canada, including 4 million meals during the COVID-19 pandemic.

More than 150 players in the major league have worked with Big League Impact to bring their charitable aspirations to life, with appx. Donated $ 5.8 million to 94 charities.

Wainwright was previously nominated for a Clemente Award in 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2019.
