A traveler overcomes an earthquake and road accident on his quest to reach Potala Palace

During the past seven months, Zhao Fanchao has traveled 5,500 kilometers and has escaped a flood, an earthquake, and was hit by a car.

He recently arrived in Tibet Autonomous Region after crossing the Jinsha River. Zhao, 30, set off from his home in Harbin, Heilongjiang Province, on May 1 and still has another 1,500 kilometers to travel to his final destination, the Potala Palace in Lhasa, the capital of Tibet.

He said he did not spend much time planning his itinerary or preparing for the trip, adding that he “had no particular reason” for the trip other than traveling to a different place.

“I’ve never been to Tibet before, but the sacred and pure atmosphere of Potala Palace has attracted me since I watched a TV program on it in 2005,” he said. “So, I made it my destination.”

So far, it has passed through Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning, Hebei, Shandong, Henan, Shanxi, Sichuan, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and Tianjin provinces.

Zhao hopes to complete his journey around the time of the Spring Festival. “I feel very happy that I will have the opportunity to welcome the Lunar New Year in Lhasa,” he said.

To make his travels easier, Zhao pulls a three-wheeled cart behind him to which he sleeps and cooks. He installed an engine in it in Henan to help the car navigate steep terrain. “In order to reduce the burden, I took only a few clothes and necessities,” he said.

Zhao said that he often walks more than 25 kilometers a day, sometimes up to 30 kilometers, and usually spends about 12 hours on the road. One summer day, he spent 17 hours hiking before reaching a mountainous area. “Thanks to many years of military life, I am in good physical condition,” he said.

He spent eight days walking through the Qinling Mountains in Shaanxi during the National Day holiday in October.

“I chose a road where I hardly see any tourists or locals,” he said.

“Before entering the mountainous region, I had prepared enough food. I was not worried about drinking water because it is abundant in the mountains.”

Zhao said he was forced to plan his route because he could not move around with his mobile phone because the reception was poor in the mountains.

He also enjoyed interacting with people in big cities. “When I was walking in cities, I liked to visit parks and scenic areas to see different people, landscapes and cultures,” he said.

Risk Management

However, during his travels, he ran into some risks.

“I was sleeping in a park in Tangshan, Hebei, when a 5.1-magnitude earthquake hit the city on the morning of July 12,” he said. “I woke up and got the earthquake news on my mobile phone.”

Before walking in the Qinling Mountains, he was hit by a car. He said, “I had cuts and bruises on my right leg and left arm.”

“After basic treatment in the hospital, I got a day’s rest and then continued my journey even though I was still lame.”

Despite the challenges, Zhao said he does not feel tired and likes to physically challenge himself.

Even though he travels alone, Zhao doesn’t feel lonely.

Almost every day, he spends several hours on the Douyin live streaming app sharing his experiences. He now has more than 230k followers and gets thousands of likes.

In September, due to his popularity, he was invited to open an online store in Douyin.

“My fans are very interested in my way and my safety as well as the delicious food from my hometown,” he said, adding that he sells Harbin sausages on the Internet that are popular with his followers.

Zhao also kept the company of a stray dog ​​that he encountered in June.

“It was a rainy day in Chaoyang, Liaoning,” he said.

“When I was looking for shelter from the rain, I found the puppy shivering. I picked it up and put its wet fur in the towel. I couldn’t be so tough to let it go again, so I decided to take it with me.”

This isn’t the first time Chow has made a long trek on foot.

In 2018, he spent 180 days hiking from Jinzhou in Liaoning to Lijiang, Yunnan Province.

Zhao said he feels honored when he receives praise and encouragement from strangers when they discover that he is from a distant city. He said, “There were also a lot of people who helped me during the trip, which made me feel very warm.”

He said it would be his last long hiking trip as his parents were concerned for his safety. He hopes to continue his journeys by taking driving trips.
