Reconstruction of 1,529 private homes in Baglung; Reconstruction progress is close to 66 percent

Galkot: Up to 1,529 private homes have been rebuilt in the Paglung District in the nearly five years since the Gorkha earthquake.

Of the 2,242 homes destroyed in the area due to the 2015 earthquake, 1,529 private homes have been rebuilt so far. With this, Baglung saw 66 percent of material progress in reconstruction.

Reconstruction has gained momentum recently, the Baglung County Project Implementation Unit of the Joint National Reconstruction Authority. Rapid steps have been taken as the Nepalese government decided to offer the grant amount to the beneficiaries to rebuild their earthquake-damaged homes.

The district has registered 2,482 homes for reconstruction and 171 homes for rehabilitation. But only 2,317 beneficiaries signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to rebuild their quake-stricken homes, and 125 beneficiaries entered into a retrofit agreement, said the co-chair of the NRA District Implementation Unit, Renuka Kumari Pandey.

Of the contracts that have been contracted, Pandey reported, 1,529 homes have been rebuilt so far and only two have been modernized.

Beneficiaries said progress on the retrofit remained slow due to rising costs and technical issues.

Besides rebuilding private homes, the NRA also accelerated the construction of integrated settlements, roads, bridges, and temples in the area. With an investment of 170 million rupees, the NRA constructed a 10 km long gravel road from Burtibang-Tamankhola.

Sources in the Natural Resources Authority said two engine bridges were being built over the Lukerpan and Phaluang streams along the route. The NRA also indicated that it has put forward the task of building a monastery in Ryadanda in Baglung-11 municipality.
