Boris Johnson speaks at a recent Brexit meeting in Brussels “close to failure” – BBC News

Boris Johnson has been in Brussels to determine the terms of his trade agreement with the EU at a dinner with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Long-running talks between the UK and the EU are said to be close to failure and the two leaders are trying to break the deadlock. Negotiations are stalled on the issue of direct competition and individual fishing quotas. Before moving to Brussels, Johnson said the EU had made demands that a prime minister could not accept. The EU has said it will soon publish emergency plans if there is no agreement, including measures for planes to fly between the UK and the EU. Meanwhile, supermarkets are given three months to prepare for controls on goods transported from Great Britain to the UK after the end of the Brexit transition period. Huw Edwards presents at BBC News Ten political editor Laura Kuenssberg, European editor Katya Adler, Irish correspondent Emma Vardy and economic editor Faisal Islam.
