Designation of emergency areas for earthquake strengthening in the cities of Tararua

Designation of emergency areas for earthquake strengthening in the cities of Tararua

Tararua County Council identified priority earthquake-prone roads in the area’s busy main streets, such as Vogel Street in Woodville, where debris falling in the earthquake was a greater public safety risk.

Landlords on the main streets of Woodville, Danivirk, Bhatua, and Ekitahun have less than eight years to make or demolish their buildings.

Tararua County Council has hardly endorsed plans to identify areas requiring most urgent earthquake strengthening to be completed soon.

Council members voted four to two to demand that the owners of earthquake-prone buildings on the main streets of the region’s four largest towns reinforce or demolish their structures within seven and a half years.

Public roads are areas that the Council believes are at greatest risk of injury or death from falling debris.

Counselors Shirley Hall and Alison Franklin opposed the plan, arguing that it would place a heavy burden on building owners and businesses in the heartland of Tararua’s towns.

Chancellor Sharon Wards missed the vote, and Mayor Tracy Collis could not vote because she was sick and had to attend the meeting remotely.

Deputy Mayor Irana Petit Weber abstained from the vote due to a conflict of interest.

Hull said there was no risk significant enough to public safety to justify overburdening the building owners by cutting their time. Many will struggle to meet the deadline, due to the constant shortage of engineers and dealers.

Under the Building Act, owners who fail to meet the job promotion deadline can face a fine of up to $ 200,000.

“It will have a serious impact on companies’ financial viability in the short term,” Hull said. “I don’t think it’s worth putting our business owners under this pressure.”

Councilor Kerry Sutherland said he sympathized with the affected building owners, but felt the council struck the right balance between public safety and consideration for the owners.

After public submissions, the council reduced the size of the Dannevirke priority area in the proposed plan due to reduced traffic and road use.

Barraud, Aldardice, and Ward St are completely removed, as is Gordon Street from High St to Hall St.

The final area covered High Street, between the streets of London and McVeigh, Millar Street to Denmark Street, and Gordon Street from High Street to Denmark Street.

The Vice President of the Dannevirke History Gallery, Murray Holden, was relieved that the Gordon St Museum was unaffected by the final division.

The museum will struggle enough to raise the more than $ 700,000 needed to do the requisite earthquake reinforcement and book busy structural engineers within 15 years.

Holden said that many of the building owners within the area were in the same boat – and he knew a few who were considering giving up their property.

He said the government needs to rethink priority road standards in small towns and introduce allowances to ease the burden on small businesses.

“We might end up like a ghost town [on High St].

“An earthquake will not kill small-town businesses, these regulations will be.”

The division of the other three major cities of Tararua remained unchanged from the initial proposal.

Woodville’s priority road will be the Vogel St section from McLean St to Ross St. PahÄ«atua will be the main street, between Huia Street and Kiwi Street to Cambridge and Patterson Streets.

Aktahna Street will be the main street between Church Street and Haswell Street.
