The downtown New Plymouth car park on Powderham Street will be closed indefinitely from December 19 as it poses an earthquake risk.

A council-owned car park in downtown New Plymouth will be closed indefinitely as it poses an earthquake risk.

An email was sent to tenants of parks downtown for cars on Powderham Street from New Plymouth County Council (NPDC) Friday saying that the seven-story building will be closing as of Saturday 19 December.

“We have received a detailed seismic assessment report that classifies the building as a ‘Substantial Hazard’ because it only meets 20 to 34 per cent of the new building standards that have been introduced since the Christchurch earthquake,” the letter said.

“We are sorry for any inconvenience this has caused, but we hope you understand that public safety comes first.”

In the letter, the council said it would organize a full refund of any prepaid money and offer to help those in need of an alternate car park. There were 140 rented properties and 125 parks were used by the public.

It also provided a link to the Majlis car rental page, which contains information about the location and cost of the other five parking spaces.

However, the link shows that all rental spaces are currently full, with a queue for every parking lot – the longest being 28. Prices for these parking areas range from $ 16 to $ 42 per week.

In an emailed statement, Joy Buckingham, director of corporate services for the NPDC Group, said the board considered proposals to upgrade the building to 67 percent of the new building standard needed to keep it operational, but decided to review the building’s future once the city was built. Buckingham said the car park was built in the late 1980s in line with the standards and building codes of the time.
