In eight minutes and 46 seconds, cracks in the public psyche tore this year’s façade.

I describe it as cracks because this is my experience.

On March 11, 2011, I was a high school student in Misawa, Japan.

The magnitude 9.1 earthquake lasted that afternoon for about six minutes.

Vivid are the memories of those six minutes, they can still clear my consciousness like the tsunami that hit our shores.

The sound of closets banging threatens to loot the walls.

Like that disaster, the swift end of human life this year required action.

Yes, the first wave of response was the marches, tears, anger and mischief long accumulated beneath the surface of the daily scene of those who lack melanin in their skin.

Then we saw mothers, veterans, and children approaching side by side and some of them in the front as human shields.
