Yamamoto told Insishi that she would ditch the kimono. But Ensici felt she was too rushed and decided to try to clean it herself.

He filled a pool at Yamamoto’s home in Hitoyoshi and spent two days washing kimonos with mud. He managed to recover three kimono made from “Oshima tsumugi”, but he couldn’t save the rest.

However, Ensici decided not to throw away the remaining kimonos, and Yamamoto gave him some clothes.

Ensici then touched upon the idea of ​​holding an exhibition in Turkey to highlight the disaster and help weave closer ties between Turkey and Japan.

“This might be a small thing, but I want to make people who have experienced disasters feel positive,” said Ensisi. “I hope it helps connect the hearts of people in Turkey and Japan.”

The damaged kimono still has traces of clay, so he plans to cut severely damaged pieces into scraps and combine them with kilim fabrics to create accessories for the gallery.

The hometown of Ensishi is located in the Zonguldak province in northern Turkey, which itself has been hit by river floods.

Many people in Turkey still remember the emergency assistance provided by Japan after it was struck by a major earthquake in 1999.

Ensici hopes its exhibition will encourage Turkish people to reflect on the damage caused by the torrential rain.

He plans to display photos of the disaster-affected areas of the place and prepare local Hitoyoshi specialties, including tea and traditional Japanese sweets, for visitors.

This is the first time he’s tried his hand at organizing an exhibition in his home country, although he has held kilim fairs all over Japan.

Ensici may still face difficulties holding the show, depending on how the novel coronavirus pandemic spreads, but he remains optimistic.
