Canterbury Earthquake: Southern responders are entitled to an additional payment

Earthquake Commission Minister David Clark said the package will provide additional payments to clients in a situation similar to Dodds.

Payments may include professional fees, contribution to legal fees, unpaid contingencies, and interest.

Clark said there were about 3,000 claimants who settled in the Southern Response Program before October 2014 who might qualify for the package.

Clark said the package will be overseen by an independent oversight committee to ensure every case is resolved fairly.

He said there was no timeframe for the package but we wanted to resolve matters as soon as possible.

Southern Response filed a lawsuit today to obtain permission to contact people who may qualify for the package.

“It is clear that these people are not getting a fair deal and that is why the crown is obligated to pay what is fair and to put that right,” said Clark.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, speaking after today’s cabinet meeting, said she did not show the crown had thrown the towel.

“It is a recognition of what people have been through and what needs to be resolved,” she said.
