The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) reported that the seismic network recorded a volcanic tectonic earthquake of magnitude 4.4 at a depth of 25 km below the northwestern side of the volcano starting at 09:27 local time on the morning of December 14. The epicenter was about 20 km southeast of Waimea. Strong shaking has been reported, with a maximum intensity of the sixth, across the island of Hawaii. The earthquake has been reported over most of the island of Hawaii. The northwestern flank of Mauna Kea has seen only 9 earthquakes greater than magnitude 4.0 over the past 60 years.
