More earthquakes in a seismic hot spot near the California line

Another set of earthquakes was recorded on Monday in an area near the Nevada-California line that has been shaken repeatedly in the past seven months.

The US Geological Survey said the strength of the largest earthquake was originally estimated at 4.9, and it was revised down to 4.7. It happened at 1:20 p.m., and was centered in the ghost town of Candelaria, Nevada – 15 miles south of Mina and 50 miles east of Lake Mono, California.

This was followed in the next three hours by a series of aftershocks, six of which ranged between 2.5 and 4.3.

The epicenter is 15 miles away from seven earthquakes of magnitude 5 and above this year (indicated by orange points on the map above):

5.1 on December 1. 5.3 on November 13th. 5.0 on June 30th. 5.1 on May 22. 5.0 on May 20. 5.1 on May 15th. 6.5 on May 15th; Nevada’s largest state since 1954.

A 4.9-magnitude earthquake was also recorded in Candelaria on Saturday.

USGS data indicates that the Candelaria and Monte Cristo Hills region of about 25 miles by 10 miles contained earthquake epicenters of 467 earthquakes of magnitude 3 and above in the seven months since the Great Quake.
