Kolkata Man opens store 9 months after shutdown, finds his favorite radio among other stolen valuables

When the government imposed a nationwide lockdown in March to control the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, Chintamoni Soni hastily pulled the shutters of his shop at the new market in Kolkata. Sonny headed to Mirzpur in Uttar Pradesh only to return after nine months.

But when Sony opened his mobile shutter and repaired bikes on December 15, he was shocked by his life. The store was looted. The Times of India reported that some cash he left behind in March among other valuables has disappeared.

Sony, 74, has run this store since 1969 and was shattered by loss.

“When I entered the room, everything was scattered. The store was completely looted and my belongings were gone. Money was also missing. My children have grown up here and I know everyone around me. I’m sad about losing money, but the state of the store left me in tears.”

He filed a complaint with the police in the case. The cops at the New Market Police Station said that of all the things Sony had a lot in the robbery, he kept mentioning an old radio set. A police officer was quoted as saying, “He kept saying that he was very close to his heart.”

Sony wants to recover some of the lost items because they were close to his heart and he is surprised that the thief hasn’t gone too far for the salable items. He said the police are helping him with the case and looking at the CCTV footage to break it.

One person in the case has been arrested for questioning so far. Police said the son of a local guard had recently set up a bike shop and had access to Sonny’s house.
