Antarctica has experienced more than 30,000 tremors since the end of August 2020, according to scientists from the University of Chile. Seismic activity was detected by the university’s National Seismic Center, as scientists observed thousands of earthquakes activity in just three months at the northwestern edge of the Antarctic Peninsula.

The White Continent, located at the Earth’s South Pole, recorded these many tremors in the Bransfield Strait, which stretches for nearly 100 kilometers – between the South Shetland Islands and the Antarctic Peninsula. This is the region where many tectonic plates and fine plates meet, and thus is subject to frequent tremors. Moreover, a study found that the peninsula area south of Shetland – Antarctica is a geodynamic system that undergoes rapid changes in plate motions and composition.

However, scientists from the Seismological Center confirmed that such a high frequency of tremors in such a short time is still a very unusual phenomenon.

According to a Reuters report, the tremors have become so frequent that they cause a straight stretch. Before earthquakes, scientists noticed the strait expanding in width by 7 or 8 mm (0.30 in) per year. But after these earthquakes, the rate of expansion increased to 15 cm (6 in) per year.

“It’s a 20-fold increase, which indicates that the Shetland Islands at this moment are separating more quickly from the Antarctic Peninsula,” said Sergio Barrientos, director of the National Seismic Center.

Experts at the center revealed that most of the earthquakes occurred during the month of September, with more than a thousand earthquakes per day. People felt one of the strongest tremors, with a magnitude of 6.

The icy continent is said to be warming at a faster rate than climate scientists expected due to climate change and global warming, leading to massive melting of ice. It remains unclear how the tremors affect the ice in the area, experts monitoring the state of the earthquake said.
