The Korean Lantern Festival has received a UNESCO World Heritage Site honorary award – BBC News
The South Korean Lantern Festival has been awarded the status of Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO. It is the annual festival of the centuries and is the birthday of the Buddha. There are colorful lanterns all over the country that adorn the temples, houses and streets and there are also large parades with elaborate floats. UNESCO said the spring festival is a “time of joy”, “in times of difficulty, it plays an important role … to help people overcome the problems of the day.” UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage status aims to protect the traditions, knowledge and skills that are inherited from generation to generation so that they are not lost or forgotten over time.
