Qasem Soleimani: US kills Iran’s main general in air attack in Baghdad – BBC News
Iran’s most powerful military commander, General Qasem Soleimani, is killed in a US attack in Iraq.
The 62-year-old was led by the military in the Middle East as the leader of the Iranian Quds Force elite.
He was killed at Baghdad Airport, along with other Iranian-backed militias, in a strike ordered by US President Donald Trump on Friday.
Soleimani’s assassination has escalated in tensions between Washington and Tehran.
Under his leadership, Iran strengthened Hezbollah against Lebanon and other Iranian militant groups, expanding Iran’s military presence in Iraq and orchestrating Syria and Syria’s offensive in rebel civil war.
Ayatollah Iran’s supreme leader Ali Khamenei has said he is “awaiting hard revenge for the criminals” behind the attack. He also announced a three-day mourning.
