The International Atomic Energy Agency is ready to send a team to monitor water leakage in Fukushima

The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency said his body is ready to send a monitoring team upon request to check the batch of treated radioactive water that will be discharged from the deactivated Fukushima No.1 nuclear plant to address concerns about the environmental impact.

When Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga visited the plant in September, he said the government wanted to make a decision “as soon as possible” on how to dispose of the water. Chief Cabinet Secretary Katsunobu Kato said Sunday during a visit to Fukushima Prefecture that the government could no longer delay the decision.

The power plant suffered major collapses due to the massive earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011, in the world’s worst nuclear crisis since Chernobyl in 1986.

The water was treated with an advanced liquid treatment system, or ALPS, to remove most of the contaminants other than the relatively less toxic tritium. It is stored in tanks on the facility’s buildings but space is expected to run out by summer 2022.

Evaporation of water from the plant was also among the disposal options discussed.

“The regulated discharge in the open sea or evaporation is technically possible” and “in line with current practices and best practices at the international level,” said the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Reflecting on his visit to the Fukushima Nuclear Complex No. 1 in February, “I feel humbled and admired by the sincerity and efforts of all the operators there, the technical people and the National Regulatory Agency – everyone involved in the decommissioning and reconstruction efforts,” Grossi said.

He said the agency plans to organize an international conference to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Fukushima nuclear crisis, where participants, including experts from Japan, can discuss nuclear safety.

Grossi also said that building a final disposal site for high-level radioactive waste from nuclear power plants, under discussion in Japan, is technically feasible, citing the case of Onkalo, the world’s first spent nuclear fuel depot in Finland.
