The Great Charleston Earthquake also affected Horry County | Column book

Visitors to Charleston on a historic tour are often told of the terrible earthquake that devastated the city in 1886. This same earthquake also caused fear in Horry County.

Noah W. Cooper was teaching at Pineville School, a small community near Cole Springs. He wrote an account of the earthquake that appeared in the 1968 edition of The Independent Republic Quarterly.

Cooper wrote that on the night of August 31, 1886, he was awakened by a terrible noise around ten in the evening.

“The house seemed to be collapsing. It was cracking, twisting and moving up and down,” he wrote. “The noise seemed like the ground fainted in great pain.”

He and others in the house rushed onto the front porch with their pajamas and another mighty roar like thunder under the ground that made them shiver with fear.

“The oak trees in the yard were swaying back and forth even though there was no wind,” he recalls. “I was afraid that the earth would open and swallow us. We gathered together until the great roar subsided.”

Knowing that this phenomenon was an earthquake, Cooper ran home, dressed. The whole time the tremors kept shaking the ground.

When he got back outside, he could hear the people nearby crying, screaming and praying.

Cooper wrote, “I have never heard such agony and earnest calls to Heaven.”

He found one woman on her knees.

“Oh, Mr. Cooper, the world is coming to an end,” she shouted. “God is disgusted by the evil of people. I am not afraid. I am ready to go and expect the world to end before the day comes. I am going home. Glory to God! Praise be to God!”

The next day, Cooper went to his school’s home and didn’t expect many students to attend. He was surprised when he found a large crowd there asking him to explain what had happened. He was explaining that earthquakes were a common occurrence all over the world when another roar like thunder came from underground.

“The little school shook. The chimney was thrown. He remembers ink bottles being thrown off the table.” There was a field of cotton waving and moving up and down as if he was on a boat in a storm at sea. “

More shouts and prayers filled the air.

Cooper said the tremors continued, with more or less violence, for more than a month.

The next day, Cooper said that reports received that Charleston had been devastated by a tsunami.

“I later learned that the shocks had caused the railroad tracks to warp to the point that the trains couldn’t run. The telegraph wires had been dropped. Hori had no news of the outside world for several days. Finally, the backpackers got into small wagons and carried the news of a few killed in Charleston. Because the walls of a brick house fell, and many were injured.
