ShakeAlertLA to be replaced by an earthquake early warning application

LOS ANGELES (CNS) – The city’s ShakeAlertLA app will stop issuing earthquake warnings after December 31, and Mayor Eric Garcetti on Wednesday urged residents to download a statewide MyShake app built with the same technology and provide the same alerts.

ShakeAlertLA is designed to notify residents when earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 or higher occur.

Governor Gavin Newsom announced MyShake on October 17, 2019, and since its launch it has been downloaded more than a million times, according to the mayor’s office.

“Through collaborative work with the US Geological Survey, the City of Los Angeles introduced the nation’s first cell phone application to deliver early warning earthquake warnings in large quantities,” said US Geological Survey Director Jim Riley. “What we learned from our important pilot partnership with the City of Los Angeles benefited people across the West Coast as we expanded ShakeAlert.”

MyShake works in the same way as ShakeAlertLA and detects earthquakes with ground motion monitors. If an earthquake of great strength is detected, an alert message will be issued warning the audience several seconds before the shaking begins.

ShakeAlertLA has issued 100,000 early warnings for all recordable seismic activities since its launch in 2018, according to the mayor’s office.
