LA retires ShakeAlertLA, and transitions to a statewide earthquake warning app

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti announced on Wednesday that the earthquake early warning app launched by Los Angeles two years ago will stop issuing alerts about impending tremors after the end of the year.

Officials said the state system works in the same way as ShakeAlertLA – the nation’s first earthquake early warning app – and detects earthquakes through hundreds of ground motion sensors across California. Jim Riley, director of the US Geological Survey, said the ShakeAlertLA app in the city “paved the way for large-scale public alert throughout California.”

The city-owned ShakeAlertLA app that was received last year was reworked after many Angelenos were freaked out by not receiving any alerts when the two most powerful earthquakes in nearly two decades struck southern California in July 2019.

Officials at the time were quick to explain to app users that the tremors from Ridgecrest earthquakes 125 miles north of Los Angeles were not strong enough to trigger an alarm in Los Angeles County. Although they feared that many of the warnings could lead to complacency, officials decided to lower the threshold for sending alerts.

The statewide app builds on those lessons learned from the ShakeAlertLA app in town, according to the Garcetti office. The mayor said the ShakeAlertLA system was meant to be a “bridge” for the statewide earthquake early warning system, and city officials worked with other cities and counties in developing earthquake early warning programs.

Now that a statewide system is in place, the ShakeAlertLA app will no longer send earthquake warnings after December 31, 2020.
