Coronavirus: US death toll rises to 2,000 in a single day – BBC News

The US has become the first country in the world to register more than 2,000 coronavirus deaths in a single day.

Johns Hopkins University data show that 2,108 people have been killed in the last 24 hours, with more than half a million confirmed.

The US would soon surpass Italy, being the country with the highest coronavirus deaths in the world.

However, experts at the White House Covid-19 team say the outbreak is leveling the US.

Dr Deborah Birx said the outbreak was stabilizing with good signs, but she cautioned: “We are not over the top because we are happy.”

President Donald Trump also said the US expects a lower death toll than the initial killings of 100,000, adding: “We are seeing clear signs that our aggressive strategy is saving countless lives.”
