There are some lessons we can learn from this terrible year.

As the 1970s drew to a close, “Doonesbury” Zoncker Harris bade farewell to what he called “a decade-long kidney stone”.

He hadn’t seen anything yet.

The end of this arbitrary division of infinity, 2020, cannot come soon.

Global pandemic. People who have denied the global pandemic and refused to take steps to slow its spread. Dysfunctional government on many levels. Misinformation on social media. Outright racism, street gangs and police brutality. Growing inequality and displacement.

And an earthquake happened in Salt Lake City. And a strange wind gust.

But out of all these horse poop, we should be able to find a few ponies to ride in the new year.

First on the list of successes is the fact that medical science, based on work that was done for years to deal with SARS and other viruses that did not spread around the world, invented a vaccine for COVID-19 in record time. In fact, there are at least three vaccines available now or soon.

And we saw how heroic our healthcare workers could be while holding a fort, even when not fully appreciated, while waiting for the rescue to arrive.

The distribution is slower than we might like. But it started, and it really started with healthcare workers and nursing facility residents, and there’s reason to hope it will be widely available in a matter of months. People will need to adhere to personally responsible behaviors for hygiene and masks for some time to come, though, as many of us can live to see normality return. 2020 holds free and fair elections. With record turnout. Amid a pandemic. In a nation mired in propaganda. Racial barriers to full participation have been erected clumsily in many countries.

Whether or not your candidate won was a huge achievement. The greatest achievement is the fact that many elected and appointed officials, in many states and societies, of both parties, stood by their duty and ignored screams of fraud and unfounded reforms, but with a loud voice.

We also learned as a nation something that Utah has known for years. Voting by mail works. There must be a lot of it.

There are still a few – and very few – of those facing a dead end who continue to look for ways to overturn the results of a democratic election and keep the current CEO in power. We can’t let our guard down completely until noon ET on January 20. But it seems likely that people will prevail.

Despite hundreds of years of inertia holding us back and a once-in-a-lifetime disease that distracts us, many Americans have decided that the time has come to face the level of systemic racism alive in our culture. Institutions as diverse as the National Basketball Association and local police departments display Black Lives Matter banners and stand in solidarity with those who have long been victims of a nation that has so badly failed to adhere to its principles.

We have also been reminded fairly candidly of the importance of education in our societies, and the critical roles that teachers and parents play.

With luck, we go ahead with some hard-won lessons on how to make life better for all of us.
