Chris Wondolowski re-signs the San Jose Earthquakes for the 2021 MLS season

Christmas 2020 was a special event for San Jose Earthquakes fans, with the club announcing Friday morning that Chris Wondolovsky had signed a one-year contract for the 2021 season. He was previously a free agent.

Wondolowski is the MLS captain who scored 166 goals and led San Jose in goals (7) this past season as he returned to the MLS League Cup qualifiers for the first time since 2017. Wondolowski will turn 38 before the 2021 season, and was recently named to MLS’s 25 Greatest list submitted by AT&T, which highlighted the 25 brightest stars in league history. Aside from keeping many league records, Wondolowksi tops earthquakes (344), starts (304) and minutes (27,555).

His best season came in 2012 when he scored 27 goals, equaling the previous one-season scoring mark, and was awarded the Golden Boot offered by Audi and Landon Donovan MVB. San Jose also won the Supporters’ Shield that year.

Danville, California, was originally selected by San Jose in its 2005 Supplemental Draft, moving from a backup option to a clinical termination. Wondolowski scored 11 goals in 35 appearances for the US men’s national team.
