Everything was on board for the 2020 earthquake

As soon as my house stopped vibrating my phone started ringing.

“Whoa! We just had an earthquake! Did you feel that?” Photographer Laura Seitz shouted after 7 in the morning.

“Yes!” I said, “We shook here too.

Due to COVID-19, we have already moved to remote work, but given the severity of the earthquake, I knew this day was going to be tough.

I started making calls to Deseret News photographers for an all-around response after hitting Magna with a force of 5.7 and feeling it all over the Wasatch front on March 18th.

Everyone knows that when it comes to big stories, we’re all in this together for as long as we need to. So our night-time photographer Scott Winterton responded in the Herriman community that morning, realizing that he’d probably be spending a long day, while those started their day shifts too early for us to quickly upload our photos to the web.

Depending on where the paparazzi resides is how and where we prioritized the locations we first responded to. But the information that was accurate was difficult to obtain. We simply did not know which areas were severely damaged.

Our KSL-TV news gathering partners were kicked off the air that morning for a short period of time due to the earthquake, so entering the information into the newsroom and then broadcasting it to the public, including those working remotely, was not so quick at first.

We hacked into portable police scanners, viewed social media, made phone call after phone call, and worked to collect as much information as possible.

Within minutes of Spenser Heaps, Deseret News’s deputy director of photography, arriving at the site of a ruined building in the city center, we had pictures in our system.

“Of course this thing totally surprised me, and it’s literally shaking me out of my sleep. But being prepared is something that you make a part of your routine as a photojournalist,” Heaps recalled that morning.

“Luckily, my batteries were charged and the camera bag was all ready to go out the door. Once the shaking stopped, I threw some clothes, threw the cameras and laptop in my truck and was ready to exit the door.”

By 7:29 am we had a story with the first photo. Within an hour, we got a full photo report from Heaps from its downtown location with photos from a ruined school in Herriman from Winterton.

After learning of massive damage to Magna in the motorhome community, photographer Jeff Allred was sent to this scene. Allred was able to quickly send us photos for urgent web story updates, giving our readers a complete and compelling insight into the homes of the severely damaged Magna victims.

With the concern that cell phone towers might be jammed, we switched the communication between our photographers into a two-way radio system – a system we invested in a few years ago for such scenarios. It was also possible that this allowed our photographers to use their cellular data to send images to our system.

Late in the morning as things calmed down, the Heaps and I managed to make our way into the building to continue curating coverage and work on editing the awesome images that were still reproduced. Despite the initial plan to work remotely, we felt we needed to be there.

Just like many residents, aftershocks shook our nerves throughout the day. But everyone working on the story, including editors, reporters and photographers, we knew our readers were counting on us.

Here are some amazing photos captured that day and in the days and weeks that followed Deseret News photojournalists.

One important advantage is the speed at which information is sent and received. With the help of the internet, the shopping habits of many persons have drastically changed. The car insurance industry hasn't remained untouched by these changes. On the internet, drivers can compare insurance prices and find out which sellers have the best offers. View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price. Using brokerage websites will allow drivers to get quotes from multiple insurers, thus making the comparison faster and easier.
