Six killed in an earthquake that shakes Croatia Newcastle Herald
world News
An earthquake struck central Croatia, killing at least six people, destroying buildings and prompting panicked residents to flee to the rubble-covered streets of a town southeast of the capital. Authorities said six people, including a 12-year-old girl, were killed and dozens injured in Tuesday’s earthquake, which also led to the preventive shutdown of the Krsko nuclear power plant in neighboring Slovenia. The Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center said the earthquake, with a magnitude of 6.3, struck 46 km southeast of Zagreb. It caused widespread damage in the hardest-hit city of Petrinja. On Monday, a 5.2 magnitude earthquake jolted the same area. Officials said a 12-year-old girl was killed in the town of Petringa, which has a population of 25,000. Five other people were killed in a semi-destroyed village near the town, HRT TV reported. Officials said that at least 20 people were hospitalized, including two who were seriously injured, adding that many were still missing. In Petringa, screams were heard from beneath destroyed homes, as I found a woman alive four hours after the earthquake. Emergency teams used rescue dogs while searching for survivors, while family members looked in despair. “My town has been completely destroyed. We have dead children,” Petringa Mayor Darenko Dombovic said in a statement broadcast by HRT. “This is like Hiroshima – half of the city no longer exists.” Marika Pavlovic, a resident of the area, said the quake felt “worse than the war”. “It was horrible, shock. You don’t know what to do, are you going to run out or hide somewhere,” she told the Associated Press. Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic and other cabinet ministers arrived in Petrinia after the earthquake. “Most of the center of Petranga is in the red zone, which means that most of the buildings are unusable,” Blinkovic said. Officials later toured a damaged hospital in the nearby town of Sisak, which was badly damaged by the earthquake. Health officials said a baby was born in a tent outside the hospital following the earthquake. Bricks and dust littered the streets of Petringa, as emergency teams used rescue dogs to help search for survivors. Rescuers said a woman was found alive about four hours after the earthquake. The Croatian Army is deployed to assist in the rescue operation. In Zagreb, people took to the streets and parks in fear, with reports of some leaving the city, ignoring the travel ban imposed due to the outbreak of the Coronavirus. The earthquake was felt across the country, in neighboring Serbia, Bosnia and Slovenia and even as far away as Austria. Authorities in Slovenia said the Krsko nuclear power plant was temporarily shut down following the earthquake. The power plant is jointly owned by Slovenia and Croatia and is located near their borders. Australian Associated Press

Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless.
