North Carolina’s 2020 Weather Review

2020 will be recorded in history as the most active year of tropical weather in the Atlantic Basin, with a total of 30 specific storms.

Extreme weather outbreaks have also emerged in several states, resulting in billions of dollars in losses.

What you need to know 2020 saw torrential rains across North Carolina. A tornado outbreak in April was the fifth largest in the state’s history; five tropical cyclones have affected the state this year.

Besides the heavy downpours, three other notable weather events from 2020 across North Carolina are worth noting.

Number 1: Tornado

According to the National Centers for Storm Events Database for Environmental Information, North Carolina had 49 total hurricane reports in 2020.

There were also 141 hurricane warnings in North Carolina, the fourth-highest amount issued in 30 years in any given year.

The most active hurricane day was April 13th, when 16 hurricanes formed across the state. This made it the fifth largest spread in the country’s history!

The only deadly hurricane occurred in one of five tropical hurricanes that affected North Carolina, Hurricane EF3 on August 4.

No. 2: Hurricanes

Arthur, Berta, Phi, Isaias and Zeta were five tropical cyclones that either barely passed through the past or made a direct hit in North Carolina this year. The Isaias were the strongest of these four, but it was Hurricane Zeta that brought tropical storm warnings to the western part of the state.

It follows the center of Isaias northward within the Central Atlantic coast from late Monday night, August 3 until the morning of Tuesday, August 4.

Outside bands North and East Tropical Storm have produced three hurricanes across parts of northeastern North Carolina.

One of the hurricanes was EF3, which produced maximum sustained winds of 140-145 mph. This hurricane moved to Windsor, North Carolina and caused 14 injuries and 2 deaths.

# 3: The Quake

At 8:07 a.m. on August 9, the strongest earthquake to hit North Carolina since Woodrow Wilson shook most of the state.

Items fell from store shelves, and there was minor structural damage in Sparta, near the epicenter, but no serious injuries.

Although it is not a weather event, the phenomenon has attracted attention statewide. There were reports of shaking from the mountains to the coast, and Spectrum News in North Carolina covered the earthquake live on the air that day.
