Twelve years ago, I traveled to Haiti to visit some dear brothers and sisters in a church there. In addition to some preaching, we did some drawing and other work with them. One day, God willing, please.

Preval Meritil was one of the primary leaders of that Haitian church. This mighty man taught the English language by reading the English Bible alongside the Creole book. He learned this so well that he was asked to translate for Billy Graham when he spoke on the island as well as the many American politicians and other notable figures who visited.

I love God and people prevail. Motivated by this love, he not only built a large church in Port-au-Prince to serve lost souls, but he also built an orphanage and a school for lost children. He and his wife Assumption of God had faithfully served for many years before her death a few years earlier and his service in 2020. We will miss his visits to our churches as well as his service in Haiti.

Several years ago when Pastor Preval was building a new home, he hired people to work with him. The engineer who worked with him told him what type of stone to use in the foundation. Because it was the most expensive rock available, Preval protested and asked if the least expensive thing might be just as good.

The engineer assured him that many of these products exist and can be purchased at a lower cost, but that this particular stone provides the best strength. Reluctantly, Preval cashed in the extra money, which is very rare in Haiti. They mixed these stones with concrete and finished off the foundation. Others got it under the roof and completed the modest home.

Several years later, on January 12, 2010, a 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck Port-au-Prince hard. He devastated the city and its environs, causing more than $ 8 billion in damage and killing over 300,000 Haitians. Luckily, my son who was there on an important trip left the island the day before the earthquake.

Due to decades of poverty in the country, many dilapidated huts have been destroyed. Even buildings with large constructions were permanently leveled or damaged. When Preval examined the countless homes that had collapsed in his neighborhood, he found that his house was still standing. Although it was shaken violently, it sustained relatively minor damage.

Then he was grateful for two things. He was grateful that the engineer gave him good advice and simply didn’t tell him what he wanted to hear. How horrific it was for the man to calm his money-conscious client by recommending inferior alternatives.

Second, Preval was grateful that he followed the engineer’s advice. Imagine his regrets if he decides to ignore the recommendation, save a few dollars, and use a lower grade stone. As he pondered how his house had survived, he thanked God for these blessings in the midst of disaster.

The Preval experience can teach us a lot, but let’s focus on two. It is important for followers of Jesus to accurately represent his truth. Our culture prefers cheap manners and poor standards. Many believe that there is no danger in ignoring God’s laws. Christians must clearly and unambiguously define what God’s will for human behavior is without yielding to the pressures of human preference.

We need to build a good foundation for ourselves. Jesus told us to build our lives on him and his teachings if we are to withstand the storms of life. Its methods are often more expensive, more troublesome, and less socially acceptable, but they are the most stable and secure you can get.

As we enter the new year, let us strengthen our foundations by spending time with God reading His Word and praying every day. When floods come and earthquakes happen, we will be very happy that we have used the best building materials on the market. Blessings, George
