The seismologist warns that the period of a quiet earthquake in British Columbia could trigger a major event

VANCOVER (News 1130) – While things have been “unstable” above the ground over the past year, analysis shows that the ground under our feet until 2020 was relatively stable here in Canada – but that doesn’t necessarily bode well for 2021.

A review of statistics by Natural Resources Canada shows that across Canada, more than 3,300 earthquakes were recorded as of 2020.

While that number is within the normal range, what we have not seen last year was a massive shake-up, with Canada’s largest earthquake of magnitude 5.3 recorded, making 2020 the least active – in terms of major earthquakes – since 1981.

And while that may sound a good thing, seismologist John Cassidy cautions that it only means increased pressure.

“It’s the largest earthquakes with a magnitude of six, seven or eight that release the most energy. So these tiny or binary sizes are a very small drop in the bucket – they really don’t release any energy associated with the movement of tectonic plates,” he explains.

“The pressure, of course, builds up because these tectonic plates are moving. They try to move at least as fast as your nails, five or six centimeters a year. But they also tend to converge together, where these tectonic plates meet, like off the west coast of Hida Gway, off the west coast of Vancouver Island. So these panels are locked together, storing energy. “
