San Jose Earthquakes 2020 Post-mortem: Danny Hosen

Danny Hosen is back for his fourth season with the San Jose Earthquakes in 2020, and it’s the same question on everyone’s mind again: Will this be his high season?

Hoesen’s highest point so far in his MLS tenure was 12 goals and four assists in the gruesome 2018 season of earthquakes, and while he always had the ability to score some goals, there was always the feeling of a square wedge in a round hole heading into the final season. Has that changed?

In a word no.

The Dutch striker started the first two games of the season, leading to the belief that he may have been a key player for Matthias Almeida in Argentina’s second NFL season. One could argue that the coronavirus lockdown has hurt Hoesen’s prospects just like everyone else, as it only started again throughout the year.

He had already settled into an offensive sub-role in MLS is Back, and appeared to be the next to fill Almeida’s “Wondo Role” – a player capable of instant start and providing a legitimate spark on the offensive bench.

Unfortunately, with games piling up after the domestic return-to-play stage, Hosen sustained an injury and underwent surgery at the end of the season to repair muscle tears in his oblique and tear in October. And that was for the period of earthquakes, which ended very quietly.

San Jose chose not to re-sign Hoesen for 2021, and Austin FC attached him to the expansion draft, which was a good move for all parties. Austin gets a seasoned striker, Hoesen gets a fresh start in a familiar league, open space for San Jose, gets allotment money and is exempt from the next expansion draft, all for a player they’ve already broken up with.

How can we summarize the Hussen period with earthquakes? I don’t think it is an exaggeration to say it is okay but not quite up to expectations. However, I think it is a two-way street. He was part of three separate systems with San Jose, in radically different styles, and was often called upon to play the central striker, even though he wanted it to be number 9.

At the same time, earthquakes have always looked ahead to be Wondo’s succession plan, whose longevity and continued production have exceeded all expectations. Hoesen looked as good as any major striker, able to score in groups, but the comeback of 23 goals in 104 MLS regular season matches is not elite. Does work but not fully penetrated. Maybe he’ll get that in Austin.

Two other items for discussion here. Firstly, Hoesen spoke at MLS is Back Tournament and talked about his racial abuse on social media, and how he told his teammates about it. In his account, many of his colleagues were not aware that such abuse was common. Although I am not in the locker room to assess their social awareness as a group, public comments that emerged during the season indicated that the team had generally grown on this front over the course of the season. I think Hoesen has spoken and alerted his teammates that racial abuse is a very big thing in 2020, waking up some folks at the club, and while it’s really terrible that he has to experience it as a person of color, I hope some people have learned from his unfortunate experiences.

And I think Hoesen has always been a guy in the class to talk to over the years, and he worked really hard. He might not have found the success he and Quakes were striving for together, but even during the ups and downs, he was up to the challenge.
