Fire officials in Depoy Bay, along the coast of central Oregon, said Saturday they were inundated with “worry and panic” calls after the city activated emergency tsunami sirens to alert residents to an approaching strong wind.

“This was apparently an alarm for the forecast weather system approaching us,” Brian Daniels, Depoe Bay’s chief of firefighting, wrote on Facebook. “There is no risk of a tsunami on Depo Bay or property within the area.”

Winds reached 83 mph in the Coast Series on Saturday, and winds of 63 mph were recorded at the Yakuena Bay Bridge and Cape Perpetua.

City officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Residents and visitors described a case of incoherent alarm after the sirens sounded a howl.

Visitor Leah Godfrey said she ran into her car after hearing a siren. She wrote on Facebook: “Please book the doomsday whistle for the actual Judgment Day.”

A resident of Depoy Bay, DeAnne Haubner Norton, wrote: “Are we going to get an alert every time the wind blows a little? If we do it every time, a real threat appears and everyone will ignore it.”

“We look forward to partnering with the city of Depot Bay to avoid hysteria in the future,” Daniels wrote on Facebook.

Depoe Bay installed tsunami sirens in 2013. Large parts of the city are in a tsunami flood zone in the event of a major earthquake in the Cascadia Subduction Zone.
