Hurricane Imogen rocks Queensland homes “like an earthquake”

“Everyone was really well prepared,” she said. “We cleaned up the hurricane right before Christmas.”

An Ergon Energy spokeswoman said the hurricane left more than 1,000 customers in Normanton and Carumba without electricity, as well as 180 on Mornington Island.

Work crews were repairing a damaged power pole to connect the Normanton and Carumba again, but that wouldn’t be a quick fix. Energy was restored to Mornington Island at lunchtime on Monday.

Residents of Normanton and Carumba have been without electricity or internet since 3pm on a Sunday.

Ergon Energy crews had to wait for the storm’s passage early Monday morning before conducting aerial patrols to spot faults, after floodwaters blocked access to the grid.

The Bureau of Meteorology has warned of continuing severe weather warnings due to heavy rains in Northern Queensland, which could lead to flash floods over several days, especially between Cooktown and Angham.

All roads leading to the Gulf are currently closed and residents are advised to avoid rising flood waters.

The system was expected to cause torrential rains and torrential warnings to the eastern side of the bay as it passed through over the coming days, with 180 mm recorded at Majors Creek, just south of Townsville, and reports on water covering large crossings in the area.

Meteorologist Rosa Hoff said that although TC Imogen is likely to be reclassified as a tropical depression, the impacts are still expected to be very significant.

“The heavy rainfall is set to increase, not the decrease associated with this reclassification. We still expect many sites to receive heavy rainfall on a large scale, particularly across the southern peninsula and the northern tropical coast, and possibly even the Herbert-Bordeken region,” she said.

“We will likely see much higher rainfall totals in the coming days, as the system continues to track eastward.

“Flood monitoring is underway for the northern equatorial coast, the watersheds in this area are wet and there are already rising rivers in many locations with more rain expected.”

The Bureau of Meteorology expects minor to moderate flood warnings in the coming days, with the possibility of major floods in areas with heavy rain.
