Croatia’s Catholic bishops offer $ 1 million relief to earthquake victims

The Bishops Conference of Croatia donates more than $ 1 million in emergency aid to the victims of the December earthquake.

Funds will go to help people most in need in Sisak Parish and Zagreb Archdiocese, after a 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck east-central Croatia on December 29.

According to the Secretary General of the Congress Fr. Kronoslav Novak, the bishops will agree to more monetary assistance at the next meeting. Bishops are also creating temporary housing for those whose homes have been destroyed, in partnership with Caritas Croatia and the Order of Malta.

“The Church will not leave its faithful, even when the lights diminish, when new fears come,” Novak told the Croatian Catholic Radio station HKR.

Last week’s earthquake and aftershocks killed at least seven people, including a 12-year-old girl, and injured 26 others.

On Monday, Catholic bishops visited several of the cities worst affected by the earthquake in Sisk diocese.

Cardinal Josip Bozanic, Archbishop of Zagreb, and his Associate Bishops, together with local Bishop Vlado Kosic, prayed for the victims in front of the أبرschina parish church.

The church was severely damaged in the earthquake, and arcade player Stanko Zek was found dead under its rubble.

Cardinal Bozanic said during the visit that he and the other bishops were there “to show solidarity” and “to witness the closeness of Bishop Kosic to the faithful entrusted to him and all the inhabitants of this region who suffered the earthquake.”

“Moreover, we are here to pay tribute to all those who have come so quickly to help the needy,” he added. “I especially stress our youth. These days, a wave of solidarity has manifested itself in our people.”

The cardinal encouraged the locals to think about what God might try to tell them during this disaster. “This may also be a sign that encourages us to look to the future with greater hope,” he said.

Bishop Kosic said on December 30 that many people had been left homeless because of the earthquake, and he asked Catholics to pray and fast so that the residents would not be subjected to further suffering.

It is estimated that 86% of Croatia’s population of four million are Catholics.

“We lost the cathedral and about a dozen other churches, not to mention the small churches that were destroyed by the earthquake and many of them were badly damaged,” he said.

“We pray for the strength to endure all of this faithfully and that in this tragedy we all remain courageous and in solidarity.”

Bozanic said on January 4 that while the damage to churches is significant, it can be repaired. He called for more attention to be paid to the victims. “What people are suffering here in the days of the earthquake is what we should put in the first place, and people need help,” he said.
