Earthquakes are no stranger to California, as the Golden State sits atop many fault lines. Some of the state’s most troublesome sources of earthquakes include the San Andreas Fault, Hayward Fault, and San Jacinto Fault, as well as the Garlock Fault.

Tension has been simmering along the San Andreas Fault for centuries, and experts expect a split Earthquake to occur when the fault line finally bursts.

Experts have been warning for some time about the Great Earthquake – a massive earthquake with a magnitude of at least 7.9, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

Now, experts hope to predict when the big hit will be.

Previously, it was impossible to predict when an earthquake would strike, but scientists want to change that.

Professor Yehuda Ben-Zion, a geophysicist in the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Southern California (USC) Dornsev College of Arts, Arts and Sciences, has plans to transform what is known as the earthquake process.

By doing this, the researcher hopes to learn more about how defects change before, during, and after a rupture.

Professor John Vidal, former director of SCEC, said: “There is a convincing understanding that earthquakes run from stress loading to rupture to reloading to the next break, and if you can recognize progress through the cycle, you get one step closer to predicting earthquakes.

But some scientists are skeptical, given the slow progress so far in predicting earthquakes, and predict that earthquakes will strike without warning.
