Italy and Bulgaria send aid to Croatia after the earthquake

Zagreb, January 8 (HINA) – Italy is sending a group of experts to Croatia to help save the cultural heritage of quake-hit Petringa, while Bulgaria has provided 100,000 euros to rebuild a high school and the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, the embassies of the two countries said Friday in Zagreb.

A 6.2 magnitude earthquake jolted central Croatia on December 29, causing severe property damage in Petringa, Sisak and neighboring communities. The earthquake was felt in neighboring countries as well, and aid was coming from all over the world.

Italy was among the first countries to provide aid to Croatia, sending 100 military tents after the earthquake. On Sunday, the Italian embassy said in a statement that it will send a batch of Blue Culture Helmets on Sunday to help protect the artistic heritage of Petinga and the surrounding area.

The Blue Helmets for Culture is a task force established by UNESCO in 2015 in response to the destruction and looting of cultural heritage in Mesopotamia, the cradle of civilization, by the terrorist group ISIS. The first task force was formed in 2016 under an agreement between UNESCO and the Italian government.

The first mission of the Blue Helmets of Culture in Croatia will last for a week and will be followed by a second contingent of Italian Blue Helmets.

The Italian embassy building in Zagreb was closed due to the damage caused by the earthquake. The embassy launched a fundraising campaign to help Croatian institutions rebuild the affected areas.

“We sympathize because we are close not only historically but also thanks to the many joint projects in the Adriatic Sea and because Italy has new memories of seismic disasters. We want to share our experience with our Croatian friends,” said Italian Ambassador Pierre Francesco Sacco.

In the past 50 years, Italy has been hit by dozens of earthquakes, some of which have had devastating consequences, such as those that struck Friuli in 1976 and Irbenia in 1980 as well as those that occurred recently, at L’Aquila in 2009 and Amatrice in 2016, the Italian embassy said.

The Bulgarian embassy said that Bulgaria sent aid worth 83,660 euros through the European Union’s Civil Protection Mechanism on January 1, including 100 radiators, 500 camping beds and 300 mattresses.

Three Bulgarian trucks delivered mineral and spring water, and the Bulgarian government provided 100,000 Euros for the reconstruction of the building of the Gornjogradska Gimnazija School and the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts in Zagreb (50,000 Euros per building). The embassy said that the two institutions played an important role in the past in bringing together Bulgarians and Croats.

At the end of December, the Bulgarian embassy donated food to the Croatian Red Cross for earthquake victims.
