Record Covid deaths and cases with NHS under tremendous pressure – BBC News

The UK has recorded the highest number of coronavirus deaths in a single day since the pandemic began – 1,325 more people have lost their lives. A record number of new Covid cases were also recorded, with more than 68,000 within 24 hours. Hospitals in the UK are under severe pressure, with some treating many more patients in April than the first peak. London and the South East of England are under the most pressure today with an NHS leader, saying the situation is “out of scale”. In the case of some patients, there is another possibility that a ventilator has not helped the lungs. ECMO machines provide intensive life support by pumping oxygen into the patient’s blood so that the lungs can rest and heal. Sophie Raworth introduces BBC News Ten to health editor Hugh Pym, medical editor Fergus Walsh and health correspondent Sophie Hutchinson – from an ECMO unit at Royal Papworth Hospital in Cambridge.
